Cromwell: Hero? King?
Attitudes to Oliver Cromwell changed during the 19th century. The case for public images or sculpture of Cromwell was first considered as a question of fair representation of English history.
If a series of statues of Kings and Queens of England were to be created, should Cromwell be included or not? The public acceptance of Cromwell as a major historical figure, of equal value to a monarch, grew steadily throughout the century. This view was particularly held by the Free Church movement, who regarded Cromwell as a national hero. However, others thought he was a villain who did nothing to end the power of Kings...since a new King, Charles II, resumed power after Cromwell's death.
Is Cromwell a hero? If so, explain why he deserves this high status.
Is Cromwell worthy of a statue like a King? Why or why not?
See your text book. Write a short paragraph for each statement below. Back up your opinion with 3 facts for each statement.
1. Cromwell is a hero because...
2. Cromwell deserves a statue like a King because...
3. Cromwell was successful in changing the total power of the King....
